Indiana Wildlife Accomplishments for
fiscal year May 2006 - May 2007

It is an exciting and important time to be involved with the IWF and Hoosier conservation. IWF and it's members have worked hard and made significant gains in these areas in this past year:

Legislative Successes
Building conservation partnerships- INCA

Senior Fishing License
Created to fund biologists, stocking, ramps

Heritage Trust Funding at $4M
Buy and protect key natural areas Clean Water Indiana Funding at $1M- Match for sediment control

Fish and Wildlife Action Committee
Successful via email alerts Created a new legislative lobbying group with 20 fish and wildlife organizations, adopted pro and con positions on 10 bills and used email network to contact legislators. Did not lose any bills.

Indiana Congressmen and Senators
Supporting non game federal funding. Six Indiana Congressmen and 2 Senators signed on to support 30% increase in federal non-game funds-Added 30 new groups - Teaming with Wildlife Coalition in Indiana

Coal Gasification Advocacy
Cut global warming, mercury, smog, acid rain IWF intervened in support of Duke/Vectren gasification plant at Edwardsport pushing carbon capture and sequestration

Great Lakes Compact
Education to ban water withdrawals-IWF leading coalition of conservation and environmental groups to adopt

Canned Hunting Compromise
Lawsuit to block ban continues-DNR and Governor now support fighting the industry lawsuit

Mercury Rules
Actively supporting stricter mercury rules to make Indiana fish safe to eat

New Website

New Efficient Office
Balanced budget - $120,000 in grants- running smooth and effective office support system for all projects

150 new members and 7 new affiliate member organizations
Most new members are backyard certified and attended IWF workshops. Dirty Dozen, Indiana Fly Casters, Wild Turkey Federation of Indiana, Indiana Bass Federation, Steelheaders NW IN, West Central Quail Unlimited, Indiana Smallmouth Conservation Club

Volunteer Development through AmeriCorps
Dozens of new volunteers recruited into IWF projects, shows and events

School Habitat Rejuvenated
Pulliam and Ball grant funded efforts for 35 new schools-train stewards to provide long term support

IWF Priorities for 2007 - 2008:

Increase Habitat Certifications-
Business, New Development, Neighborhood, Schoolyard, Backyard-criteria developed for fee based system-launching this summer

Train 60 Habitat Stewards
Continue habitat workshops statewide

Grow Office Habitat Demonstration Areas
Backyard techniques-volunteers

Support Ban on Canned Hunting
Assist DNR rule enforcement& lawsuit

Lead Support for Great Lakes Compact
Bans water withdrawal-passage 2008 Legislature will be top legislative project

Support Strong Indiana Mercury Rules
90% + removal -press for IDEM Rules Adoption Fall, 2007 — Chuck Brinkman coordinating

Win Approval of Edwardsport Coal Gas Plant
Cut Global Warming, Mercury, Smog and Acid Rain - Fall, 2007

Encourage No-Till Farming
Farm bill subsidies to cut soil run-off-Dean Farr leading project

Support Water Shortage Plan for Indiana
Protects Fish and Wildlife with low flow minimums in drought- mandates conservation

Advance Indiana Wildlife Action Plan
Cooperation with DNR and conservation groups statewide to improve non-game habitat

Board Member Projects:

  • Recruit 250 new members and 5 new organization affiliates
  • Raise an additional $130,000 from events, individuals, grants
  • Publish Hoosier Conservation quarterly with ad revenue increased
