PLACE OF WORSHIP HABITAT

Congregants planting shrubs for wildlife

A number of properties owned or managed by places of worship are currently under-used by the congregation, serving largely visual backdrops for the buildings and parking lots.

The land around your place of worship could become an inspiring model for enhancing wildlife habitat, and you could help fulfill congregational missions by:

  • Creating an outdoor sanctuary for people to interact with nature
  • Extending congregational relevance within your neighborhood and local community
  • Affirming the interfaith approach to natural resource stewardship and spirituality
  • Limiting your ecological footprint, or your impact on energy conservation and wildlife habitat
  • Minimizing maintenance costs for congregations (e.g. lawn mowing, trash pickup, vandalism, etc.)

By taking the steps outlined in IWF's Wildlife Friendly Certification Program, places of worship can illustrate their dedication to caring for all living things and  to educating their members about being good stewards of the Earth.
